As part of Shapes' retainer clients, I designed a completely new domestic abuse support website for Kent City Council, creating a safe digital space that prioritises accessibility, simplicity, and emotional safety for vulnerable users.
Phase 1: Discovery & Strategy
We started with an in-depth client workshop, where we:
Worked with the clients to map the user journey.
Created detailed user personas based on real needs.
Completed thorough content research.
Phase 2 : Design Approach
I worked entirely in Figma, this allowed me to developed:
Detailed wireframes focused on simplicity and clear navigation.
A complete component library for consistent user experience.
Full page designs.
Interactive prototypes for client testing and approval.
Phase 3 : Brand Development
I created a distinct visual identity including:
A formatted logo to fit in the navigation bar.
A colour palette differentiating from partners.
Custom icon system for different areas of domestic abuse.
A pattern to be added in design elements.
Phase 4 : Technical Application
Manually loaded and formatted content into the built components.
Ensured responsive functionality across all devices.
Test for any bugs or issues.
Key Considerations
Emotionally supportive without being overwhelming.
Visually different from partners such as the NHS and police.
Compliant with highest accessibility standards (WCAG AAA).
Simple to navigate during potentially stressful situations.
The design system I created will extend into future Kent City Council domestic abuse awareness campaigns, ensuring consistent messaging across all platforms.
